Job Application for Senior Firmware Engineer (Medical Devices)

← Back to Careers

💼 5 to 10 years📍 Pune (Wakad) · On-site⚙️ Firmware

We are looking for

A senior firmware engineer who has written and shipped embedded firmware for medical devices, and who understands that in a medical product the firmware is part of the safety case, not only the feature list. You will own the firmware of a device from architecture to release: you decide how it is structured, you write the critical parts yourself, and you produce the documentation a regulated product needs.

This is a hands-on role. We are looking for the person who writes the drivers, the state machines and the alarm handling, and who can explain how each one fails safe.

Should have the following responsibilities and background

Architecture

  • Define the firmware architecture of a device: tasks or super-loop, interrupts, state machines, memory map, boot and update path, and fault handling.
  • Choose between bare metal and an RTOS, and between MCU options, with the hardware engineer, on power, cost, timing and certification grounds.
  • Keep safety-related code small, separate and testable.

Firmware Development

  • Write drivers and application firmware in C (and C++ where it fits) for ARM Cortex-M and similar MCUs: ADCs and analog front ends, sensors, motors and pumps, displays, storage and communication interfaces.
  • Implement BLE and other wireless links, bootloaders and secure firmware update.
  • Design for low power on battery operated and wearable devices, and measure it on the bench.
  • Implement alarms, watchdogs, self-tests and safe states, and prove they work.

Medical Software Process

  • Work to IEC 62304: software requirements, architecture and design, unit and integration verification, traceability and release records.
  • Take part in risk management to ISO 14971: identify software hazards, define risk controls in firmware and verify them.
  • Support the IEC 60601 safety and EMC work where it touches the firmware.
  • Use version control, code review, static analysis and unit testing as normal daily practice.

Bring-up, Debug and Collaboration

  • Bring up new boards with the hardware team using JTAG/SWD debuggers, oscilloscopes and logic analysers.
  • Root-cause field and test failures and close them with evidence.
  • Explain firmware decisions and risks clearly to clients and to the team, and review other engineers’ firmware.

Technical Skills Required

  • Medical device firmware: Hands-on firmware on at least one medical device that reached clinical use, regulatory submission or production.
  • Embedded C: 5 to 10 years of production embedded C on microcontrollers: interrupts, DMA, peripherals, memory and timing constraints.
  • Architecture: Tasks, interrupts and state machines; bare metal or an RTOS (FreeRTOS, Zephyr or similar); fault handling and safe states.
  • Medical standards: Working knowledge of IEC 62304 and ISO 14971; awareness of IEC 60601.
  • Connectivity: BLE and at least one of USB, CAN, RS485, Wi-Fi or cellular; bootloaders and firmware update.
  • Analog and sensors: ADCs and analog front ends, sampling, filtering and calibration.
  • Low power: Sleep modes, power budgets and measuring current on the bench.
  • Quality practice: Git, code review, static analysis (for example MISRA C), unit testing and traceability.

Preferred Skills (Added Advantage)

  • Class B or Class C software under IEC 62304.
  • Product design services or contract engineering, working for more than one client.
  • ISO 13485 quality system experience.
  • Pumps, motor control, pressure or temperature control loops, or biosignal (ECG, SpO2) acquisition.
  • Embedded Linux on an application processor alongside an MCU.
  • Having taken a device through certification into production.

Qualifications

  • B.E. / B.Tech / M.E. / M.Tech in Electronics, Electronics and Telecommunication, Instrumentation, Computer or Electrical Engineering.
  • 5 to 10 years of hands-on embedded firmware development, including medical device work you can name.
  • Able to walk through firmware you wrote yourself in detail: architecture, a hard bug, a safety control and how it was verified.
  • Good verbal and written communication in English.

Will have the following remuneration and work location

  • CTC Range: As per industry standard for relevant experience.
  • Pune, Wakad Office. In-office role, five days a week.
  • Reports to: Engineering Manager or CDO.
